After completing our program and earning degrees from Bethany and the University of Minnesota, Seth works at Barr Engineering Company, a consulting firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
WHAT YOU DO • • • I work for a consulting firm that provides a wide range of engineering services for a variety of clients. I have spent the majority of my time in the power sector working with coal power and ash management facilities, wind turbines, and dams. About 15-20% of my time is spent in the field performing construction engineering and management services including surveying, documentation, and inspection. While in the office, I spend the majority of my time preparing drawings and specifications, writing reports, and designing in Civil 3D.
HOW YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE • • • I want to become a go-to expert in a certain area of engineering (still to be determined!). Moreover, I want to be known as someone who is enjoyable to work with and who has the technical and leadership ability to manage large-scale successful projects. In my personal life I want to be a spiritual leader for my wife and three children. There has been nothing more fulfilling (and tiring!) than becoming a father of three.
HOW BETHANY HAS PREPARED YOU • • • Bethany was a great first step as an 18-year-old entering the free world. I was a part of some successful athletic teams where I had the pleasure of meeting several lifelong friends and learned more about being a member of a team and the value of commitment. Academically I grew to a new level. My first ‘D’ on a pop quiz quickly humbled me and taught me that I had a lot to learn and that college wasn’t going to be that easy. I am thankful for the small class sizes and all the teachers who were willing to help after class. One of my favorite classes was a course I really didn’t want to take: Ethics with Dr. MacPherson. To my surprise, that was one of my favorite classes of my college experience. Dr. MacPherson really made me think and it was a pleasure to study moral issues from both a worldly view and a Christian view.
ADVICE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS • • • Engineering is a good field to get into and the engineering program offered at Bethany was one of the best opportunities of my life. Over the last five years our company has grown from about 300 employees to over 600 employees.
