Women’s basketball player Sandin in national spotlight

The Bethany women’s basketball team’s record currently stands at 3-4 (1-1) entering the second week of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. The Vikings have benefitted greatly from the scoring ability of freshman Haley Sandin. Sandin was named the UMAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season after games against UW-Superior and St. Scholastica this past weekend. In those two games, Sandin averaged 25.5 points per game. The guard shot 51.7% (15-29) from the field and 56% (9-16) from behind the three-point arc. She also tallied three assists and three steals per game while averaging 37 minutes of action.

Sandin was also recently recognized as one of the top five scorers in the nation. Hero Sports puts Sandin at third in the nation in scoring among women’s basketball players competing at the Division III level.

On the season, Sandin is averaging 26.3 points per game behind 43% (60-138) shooting from the field and 35% (19-53) accuracy from three-point land, which ranks her first in the UMAC. She is also shooting 72% (45-62) from the free-throw line while averaging 2.7 assists and steals per contest for the Vikings during her 38 minutes per game.

Sandin and company will travel to Wartburg College on Tuesday night for a non-conference game before for an important conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at home against rival Martin Luther College. Tip-off for Saturday’s game is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Bethany’s Sports and Fitness Center.
