Bethany Lutheran College is adding to its growing degree options within its Education Program by now offering a teacher licensure program in K-12 Physical Education. Bethany education students who complete the program, and other state requirements, are eligible to apply for a Minnesota teaching license for grades K through 12 physical education. These graduates are then able to be hired as physical education teachers within districts for elementary, middle, or high schools.
The process to add the program is a culmination of a year and a half of work with the Minnesota Professional Educators’ Licensing Board (PELSB). The structure of the program is unique among programs offering the physical education licensure.
Dr. Carrie Pfeifer, Associate Professor of Education, noted that the program is being offered in response to requests from alumni, current students, and faculty and staff of Bethany.
Pfeifer explained, “Our K-12 Physical Education program has been integrated with courses from our Exercise Science major. This adds a unique dimension as well as an important level of rigor.”
Bethany’s complete list of licensure programs includes: K-6 Elementary Education, 5-12 English, 5-12 Math, 5-12 Social Studies, and K-12 Special Education/Academic and Behavioral Strategist, and K-12 Visual Art. In addition, Bethany also offers five endorsement fields to add to K-6 licensure: Preprimary (ages 3-5), and middle level endorsements in English, math, science and, social studies. Many of the licensure programs are approved for both undergraduate and post-baccalaureate levels.
