Athletic Department Administrative Changes Outlined

The Bethany Lutheran College Athletic Department will begin the 2022-23 academic year with a newly modified administrative structure. The changes come after longtime Athletic Director Don Westphal resigned in July to take on a new role directing the Bethany Fund within the College’s Advancement Department.

Throughout the 2022-23 academic year, Bethany’s current Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Facilities Ryan Kragh and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Patrick Garvin will co-direct the day-to-day operations of the Athletic Department.

Entering his 22nd year at Bethany, Kragh will continue as the Head Baseball Coach and work in compliance combined with a variety of other duties within the Department.

After completing his second season as the Vikings head men’s basketball coach, Garvin will also assume an expanded administrative role. He brings experience in athletic administration, having served as the Director of Compliance at Benedictine University in Mesa, Arizona, from 2015-17. Garvin will work in the area of facilities management for the Department and will take on other assigned responsibilities.

As part of their administrative tasks, both Kragh and Garvin will work directly with all Bethany coaches and staff members to assist with their needs and facilitate initiatives within their respective programs.

Finally, there will also be various duties in the Athletic Department shared amongst the assistant coaches who will also be taking on expanded roles for the College.

All of these changes are happening as Bethany continues the search process for a permanent athletic director.
