Andrew Jelkin

Andrew JelkenWhat you do:

Credit Analyst, U.S. Bank, Mankato, MN, Head Boys Tennis Coach, Mankato West High School, Mankato, MN

As a credit analyst, my work day is spent underwriting the bank’s commercial loan portfolio to address and mitigate the applicable risks to the bank. On a daily basis, my responsibilities include financial statement spreading, loan documentation review, financial analysis, loan covenant testing, collateral management, and writing credit review reports.

This spring I have also taken on a head coach position with the Mankato West Tennis Program. I spend my time leading practices, managing the roster and MSHSL requirements, and communicating effectively with parents and players.

What inspires you:

I was drawn to banking after BLC alum Jennifer Schwartz came to speak to my finance class. I saw her passion for the Credit Analyst role and I thought that it matched really well with my analytical tendencies and abilities. That drew me to pursue this career.

I was drawn to the coaching role at M.W. due to my personal tennis experience in high school and my time at BLC. I have had many great coaches throughout my athletic career and I was very excited to have the opportunity to pay it forward to younger kids.

How do you want to make a difference:

In banking, my goal is to work my way into a portfolio manager position. In this role, I would be communicating directly with the customers while maintaining my credit analyst duties for a specific portfolio of loans.

As a coach, my goal is to develop the abilities of my athletes while also preparing them to tackle the challenges life will throw at them.

How did Bethany prepare you:

Bethany has prepared me for the future by giving me a fantastic academic base that propelled me early in my career. The support of the faculty and alumni community has helped get me connected, pushed me to be great, and has provided my first job out of school which I am incredibly grateful for. I was also blessed to be on the BLC tennis team which taught me many life lessons and allowed me to meet life long friends.

What do you remember most about Bethany:

The thing that I remember most about Bethany is how much the faculty truly cares for your success and the times they went the extra mile to help me. I will also always remember the memories and lifelong friendships that I was able to make in my time as a student!

Advice for students:

If there is an opportunity you are interested in pursuing, don’t be afraid to ask! You will surprise yourself at the opportunities that arise when you ask for them and those that follow when you do the prior things well.
