Ruth Wels, a May 2012 graduate of Bethany Lutheran College, has been selected as the winner of the national Making the Cut editing competition. The contest is sponsored by PromaxBDA, the international association for entertainment marketing professionals, and is open to undergraduate students worldwide. Judges graded all entries on creativity, production quality, and marketing objectives. Wels submitted a spot titled Sodium Borate to promote the television show Supernatural on the CW network. The winning promotional spot will air nationally on June 22, 2012.

“The goal of the promo was to create something interesting for the audience,” commented Wels. I chose a clip from the show that I found appealing and added a unique twist by creating original footage.”

Wels was presented with the award at the 2012 PromaxBDA conference held June 11-14, 2012, in Los Angeles, California. Bethany students Aaron Evans and Kab Kaniess were also present at this conference and are former Making the Cut contest winners. In addition, Wels and Evans participated in the prestigious student portfolio night at the conference.

“For the first time in our program, the school name had preceded the students,” said media arts faculty member Kurt Paulsen. “Bethany has certainly gained the attention of this well-connected organization.”
