Professional Licensure Disclosures

Bethany Lutheran College offers a variety of challenging academic programs through which professors mentor students to pursue knowledge, truth, and discernment for productive and fulfilling lives. Some academic programs lead students to career paths for which they need to obtain and maintain professional licensure or certification to be employed. The curricula for these programs at Bethany Lutheran College have been designed to prepare students for licensure or certification in their fields and to sit for Minnesota licensure exams. Each state has its own licensure boards responsible for setting requirements for licensure or certification. Bethany students planning for careers  in any states other than Minnesota should be aware of the specific licensure or certification requirements for those states. Additional requirements might include supplemental coursework, testing, and personal identification documentation.

Students interested in pursuing careers requiring professional licensure in states other than Minnesota can find information about other states’ requirements below. Additionally students are encouraged to speak with their academic advisors at Bethany, especially prior to starting academic programs leading to licensure, for more information about becoming licensed in other states.

Education

Being a teacher is both very challenging and incredibly rewarding. Bethany professors believe that future teachers educated from a Christ-centered perspective will be better prepared to meet the needs of children in a multi-cultural society whether in public or private schools.

Bethany Lutheran College offers Minnesota state-approved teaching licensure with optional endorsements in communication arts and literature, mathematics, pre-primary, science, and social studies. Bethany also offers Minnesota state-approved licensure for grades 5-12 in English, Mathematics, and Social Studies, and K-12 licensure for Studio Art. Bethany Lutheran College Education Programs are approved by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). Students desiring to teach in Lutheran schools take additional coursework for certification by the Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

National Certification

Students graduating from a counseling program are eligible to apply to take the National Counselor Examination administered by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) and become National Certified Counselors (NCC).

Minnesota State Licensure

All graduates of BLC’s Master of Arts in Counseling program are eligible to apply to the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy (BBHT) for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Minnesota. The LPC license is considered a Mental Health Practitioner license. Students must complete the NCE (or an alternate examination, determined by the BBHT to be equivalent to the NCE) and 2,000 hours of post-degree supervised professional practice. These hours may be completed after licensure, based on a supervision plan that is accepted by the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.
The MA in Counseling is also designed to meet the academic requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in Minnesota. The LPCC is considered a Mental Health Professional license. Students must complete the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor Examination (administered by NBCC) and 4,000 hours of post-degree supervised professional practice in the delivery of clinical services in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses and disorders in both children and adults. These hours must be completed prior to application for the LPCC.
For complete details regarding licensing as an LPC and/or LPCC, please refer to the BBHT website at Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.
