The History of Halvar

Founded in 1927, Bethany has long resided on the edge of the Mankato hilltop. Beginning as a ladies’ educational institution, Bethany later grew into a high school, then into a junior college, and now into the 4-year institution it is today; offering undergraduate and graduate programs.

As the college grew, a school mascot emerged. The Bethany Viking, with its imposing figure yet friendly charm, became a source of inspiration. He is an active spirit in deed and faith with a distinctly Lutheran taste for the world’s finest Lutefisk. While carried in the hearts of students for years, the Bethany Viking became flesh – or stuffing – at Homecoming of 2021. Alumni, students, and friends met him and blessed him with the name “Halvar,” defender of the Rock of our salvation.
